Family Move Cost Calculator
A family move is not a single-person budget multiplied by headcount. Children add documents, school places and a different housing requirement.
School places may require documents, assessments and a deposit months before arrival. The waiting list, not the fee, is often the binding constraint.
Children change the housing decision
A couple can take a studio for three months; a family cannot. School catchment, bedrooms and commute change the rent line before any school fee is counted. Add the housing difference explicitly so it is not buried in the monthly budget.
School calendars also set the move date. Arriving mid-term can mean a temporary placement or a term of waiting, both of which cost money.
Documents multiply
Each family member needs passports, visas, birth or marriage certificates, translations and sometimes legalisation. The per-person cost looks small until it is multiplied by four and paid twice because a certificate was rejected.
Frequently asked questions
Should school fees be in the relocation budget or the monthly budget?
Split them: enrolment and deposit are one-time relocation costs; monthly fees belong in the ongoing budget. The calculator keeps both visible.
Do children need separate visa applications?
Usually yes, even when they travel on a parent's application. Check the dependent rules and the document list for each family member.
Is a larger home always needed?
Not always, but the requirement changes the rent range. Price the family-sized option before committing to a neighbourhood.
