The customs value is not the purchase price
Customs value generally includes the goods plus transport and insurance to the border. A shipment declared at the original purchase price can still attract duty on a higher value once freight is added. Keep the mover invoice and the inventory consistent.
Used goods do not automatically enter duty-free. Many countries offer relief for a genuine change of residence, but the scheme has conditions: ownership before the move, a deadline for importing, and a detailed inventory.
Relief is a procedure, not a checkbox
Relief usually has to be claimed at import with supporting documents, not refunded later. Confirm the form, the deadline and the evidence with the destination customs authority or a broker before the container ships. A missing inventory line can turn a duty-free move into a bill.

Are used household goods duty-free?

Is VAT charged on the duty too?
In many systems import VAT is calculated on the customs value plus duty, which is why the order of the two lines matters. The calculator follows that common structure.
Do I need a customs broker?
For a full container and a relief claim, a broker is often worth it. Ask for the fee as a separate line and confirm who submits the inventory.
